Mr. Vernon Maurice Evans was born to Tolbert Evans, Jr. and Mary L. Thomas, on September 12, 1951 in Jacksonville, Florida. Both parents preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by faithful Grandparents, George and Bertha Thomas, Riley Denard (Step-Father), George Thomas Jr. (Dearest Uncle), Reginald Thomas (Bubba), Lottie Mae Copeland (Dearest Aunt) and Harriet Copeland (Dearest Sister).


 

Vernon graduated in 1968 from New Stanton High School. He then began his career serving his country in the United States Marine Corps at the age 18 and after an honorable discharge his  civil career started as a Correctional Officer with the Department of Corrections known as the City Prison Farm. Thereafter he entered the Police Academy and became an Officer/Detective with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office for 32 years and retired from the Fugitive unit. He went on to continue his career with Duval County Public Schools and retired on September 12, 2016 as a School Resource Officer after 11 ½ years. He was District 18 member at Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church.


 

Mr. Evans is survived by his wife, Cheryl Denise Evans of 22 years; 3 daughters, Pamela Evans-Goodner(Will), Patrina Evans-Smith (Carl), and Kennisha Evans and 1 son Cameron Evans; Granddaugters, Courtney Evans, Alexis Mote, Aaliyah Jenkins, Carly Smith; Grandsons Jakori Brown, Brandon Goodner; Greatgrandson, Kerrell Robinson; 4 sisters, dear sister Jill Hodges (Mike), Sylvia Evans, Priscilla, and Rosemary Denard; 2 brothers, Tolbert, III and Michael Evans; dearest brothers-in-law, David and Michael Rainge, Sr. and dearest sister-in-law, Karen McClain; dearest aunt, Ruth Thomas; dearest uncle, Harold Copeland; dearest niece, Lolita Neither, dearest cousins, Wiley Thomas (Gwen), Cynthia Lazenberry (Edward), Linda Thomas, Samuel Thomas; and dearest friend, Christopher Johnson (Diane) and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.
