Minnie Mitchell Obituary

Mrs. Minnie Pearl (Graves) Mitchell was born on December 18, 1941 in (formerly Gastonburg) Catherine, Alabama to the late Cornelius and Adlay Graves.  She was born the third child of 5 children. Minnie Pearl Mitchell went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, August 4, 2020 at 2:26 A.M.

Minnie grew up in Boiling Baptist Church and graduated from Wilcox County Training School in Millers Ferry Al.  Minnie then attended Selma University, Selma, AL and Alabama State University, Montgomery, AL. Shortly afterward, Minnie relocated to Columbus, GA.

In 1965, Minnie met and married the love of her life Deacon Raymond David Mitchell, Sr., while he was in the U.S. Army and stationed in Fort Benning, GA.  In that same year, Raymond moved his bride back to Brooklyn, NY where he resided previously.  They moved their family to Jamaica, Queens, NY, in 1979, where they resided until 2004.

In 1971, Minnie and Raymond joined Jones Temple; under the leadership of Elder Willie L. Jones where she gave her life to Jesus Christ.  This is also where Raymond was ordained as a Deacon. In 1982, they joined the family of Holy Tabernacle Cathedral; under the leadership of Bishop Carl Jerome Graham, her and her family were faithful members for twenty-two years.

Minnie and Raymond moved to Jacksonville, FL. after he retired in March of 2004.  They joined Greater Hope Ministries, under the leadership of Pastor Bruce Cohen in the same year.  During her years at Greater Hope Ministries, she was loving called Mother Mitchell.  What a fitting name since she was not only a mother, she was a grandmother and even friend to many.

During her 39 years in New York, of which 25 years she lived in Jamaica, Queens, NY.  She was loved and sought out by so many, children, young adults and grownups alike.  She was the trusted, cherished and beloved neighborhood babysitter.  She was the neighborhood seamstress.  She made an entire wedding dress!  She was counselor and friend to many.  The same rang true for her 16 years in Jacksonville FL. with her Greater Hope family.  She loved deeply and was greatly loved by all. She will be sorely missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Cornelius and Adlay Graves, her husband of 42 years, Raymond David Mitchell, Sr., her grandson Ricky Lamont Mitchell and her 3 brothers, James T. Graves, Cornelius Graves, Jr. and Robert Lee Graves Sr.

She leaves to cherish her memory: 5 children, Anna Samuel (Henry) of Queens, NY, Raymond David Mitchell, Jr. (Norma) of Jacksonville, FL, Natashya Hendrix (John) of Wesley Chapel, FL., Eric Mitchell of Jacksonville, FL. and Deric Mitchell (LaTrina) of Queens, NY; 12  grandchildren, Arthur, Myah, Christopher, Justin, John, Kordreq, Kordre, Roger, Kameron, James, Sarah, Thomas, Khadija, Timothy; 2 great grandchildren, Krystal & Christopher; 1 sister Rebecca G Marshall (Frank) of Jacksonville, FL., 2 Sister-in-laws, Rosie Burrell Graves and Ethel Hill of Sedley, VA; 1 Brother-in-law, Erby Lee Mitchell (Mildred) of Brooklyn, NY; 3 god-children, Vonnie of Buffalo NY, Batrice of Schenectady, NY, Anton of Brooklyn, NY and Walter of GA; a host of honorary sons and daughters, nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
