Virgia L. Mills

September 23, 1948 — September 10, 2024

Virgia Mills Obituary irgia Lee Mills, fondly known as Virg or Aunt Virg, was born to Beura and Jewel Seward in Blanton, Georgia on September 23, 1948. As a young child, she displayed leadership skills in drama and music with her neighborhood playmates. She was a self-taught pianist and played for various churches in Jacksonville since she was 12 years old. Virg attended elementary school in Valdosta and Jacksonville and graduated with the first Senior Class of William M. Raines High School in 1966. Virgia was a jack of all trades. She was a licensed cosmetologist, an LPN, a Real Estate Agent, a Tax Preparer, and an Ombudsman for the state of Florida. All licenses were current because she said, "You never know what the future holds. I may have to go back to work." For over 23 years, she worked in supervisory and management positions for the US Postal Service, which she thoroughly enjoyed. After retiring, she decided to "do something." Virgia returned to college in her sixties to pursue a degree. She received her bachelors and masters degrees in Christian theology from ZOE University. Virgia enjoyed writing, reading, jazz music, Luther Vandross, The Whispers, The Canton Spirituals and bragged that she had seen all the episodes of "In the Heat of the Night." Virg loved Christmas: the decorations, the music, and presents which she opened and resealed before Xmas and acted surprised. Her home was often the gathering place for Sunday dinners and family potlucks. She released her first memoir in 2022 entitled "Old Opinionated Eyeglasses," in which she reflects on the socioeconomic lessons of African Americans in the Pickett Community while growing up in the 1950s and 1960s. Virgia is preceded in death by her parents, Beura and Jewel Seward; and her siblings, Thomas Rouse, James Kelly, Chiffon Jones, Pearlie Mae Rouse, and Willie Ola Jackson. Virg married the absolute love of her life Phillip Mills, Jr. in 1971 and leaves him to mourn and cherish her memory along with their children: Dr. Macey T. Mills, Elder Tracey Mills, Phillip Michael Mills (Kourtney Golden-Mills); grandchildren: Alexandra, Matthew, Micah, Johnathan, and Destini. Her siblings: Malinda Seward-Smith, Jeremiah Seward (Adrian), Rev. Samuel Seward (Trudy), Harriett Seward, and Minnie Seward-Morman (David): sisters-in-law Annie Ola Rouse and Angelette Christopher; Godson: Troy Townsend and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends. Services Celebration of Life Saturday September 21, 2024 11:00 AM Mt. Bethel Baptist Church 1620 Helena Street Jacksonville, FL 32208
