Mr. Ulysses Bernard 'Bernie' Carter, 85, passed away to be with the Lord on May 13, 2016. Mr. Carter was born in Callahan, FL to the late Ulysses and Bernice Alethia Whitfield Carter. His parents, sister Annette Walker, and brother Benjamin H.Carter, preceded him in death. He attended public school in grades 1st-9th in Callahan, FL, and graduated from Stanton High School and Florida A&M University. He was involved in the following college activities: President of his summer graduating class President of College Chapter of the NAACP Charter Captain of 'F' Company 10th Regiment Scabbard Blade Society Vice President of Future Teachers of America Vice President of the Spanish Club Member of the Radio Choral Ensemble Varsity Baseball Team Selected by Alpha Phi Alpha as the most well rounded male student in the graduating class. He served his country in the United States Army. He was a honorably discharged Korean Army Veteran. While in the military he was affiliated with Bethlehem Baptist Church (McKeesport, PA) and Monumental Baptist Church (El Paso, TX). After being honorably discharged, he became a member of Mt. Ararat Missionary Baptist Church. During his more than 46 years at Mt. Ararat Missionary Baptist Church, he served on the Board of Trustees, Usher Board #3 and was a teacher of various classes in the Sunday School. He retired from the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta - Jacksonville Branch. He was involved in the following community activities: Meninak Club of Jacksonville Vice Chairman of the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center Advisory Council President of the Board of Directors of the Speech And Hearing Center, Inc. Vice President of Volunteer Jacksonville JCCI Chairman of the Bank and Finance Advisory Committee Florida State Junior College Greater Jacksonville Agricultural Fair Association United Way of Northeast Florida Jacksonville University Council Special Olympics SAC of Lakeside Middle High School (Clay County), Brentwood School of Performance Art and Andrew Robinson Elementary School (Duval County) Vice President of the Board of Library Trustees President of the Friends of the Library for the Bradham - Brooks (Northwest Branch) Library. Surviving him are his beloved wife Betty Johnson Carter; Daughter, Bernadette A. Carter (CA); Niece, Elaine B. Chandler (VA); Nephews, Leonard Johnson, Jr., Ruben Dwayne Johnson and Isaiah Freeman III; Brother-in-Law, Leonard Johnson (Johnnie Mae); Sister-in-Law, Geraldine Aldridge; Cousins, Mildred Lewis Jones, Frankie Lewis, Sylvia Rowe, Doris Lovette of California and special friends, Col (Ret.) James S. Guyton, Jr. ( Alvergia), Norris Reid (Lillian) , Wilma Lauray, Deacon Erno Denefield (Gail), Dr. Karen Fleck, MD, William Aldridge, Jean Copeland, Candy Bray, Bobbi Morgan-Jones and many loving relatives and caring supportive friends.
