Antonio “Toto” Sylvain, 80, passed away on September 11, 2026, in Jacksonville, Florida. He was born on October 9, 1945, in Haiti to Marietta Lacroix and Wilner Sylvain and was raised in Port-au-Prince.
From an early age, Antonio was known for his intelligence, competitive spirit, determination, and wonderful sense of humor. He enjoyed soccer and swimming and later proudly served in the Haitian Army.
Antonio eventually made the courageous journey from Haiti to the United States by boat, determined to build a better future. Through hard work and perseverance, he obtained his permanent residency and later proudly became a United States citizen. He worked first as a taxi driver and later as an HVAC technician. Exceptionally resourceful and gifted with his hands, Antonio could seemingly learn to do anything simply by watching someone do it once.
Above all, Antonio was a devoted family man. He deeply loved his wife, Marie Farnese Beaubrun Sylvain, and his love and devotion to her remained evident throughout their life together. He treasured his children and grandchildren, who knew him as a loving father and grandfather, a protector, a problem-solver, and someone who could always make them laugh.
Antonio was also a man of deep faith and extraordinary generosity. Even after losing his sight and no longer being able to work, he continued helping those in need, particularly in Haiti. From assisting with a child's education to helping someone afford needed medication, he willingly shared what little he had. His generosity reflected a simple truth by which he lived: helping others did not require having much—only a willingness to give.
Antonio was preceded in death by his parents, Marietta Lacroix and Wilner Sylvain, and his aunt, Rita Lacroix.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Marie Farnese Beaubrun Sylvain; his children, Skerline Sylvain, Stanley Sylvain, Sherley Sylvain, Saddmae Sylvain, Steeve Markens Sylvain, and Sherby Sylvain; and his grandchildren, Samirah Bien-Aime, Shayenn Bien-Aime, Sarayah Sylvain, Sapphire Sylvain, Shahzad Sylvain, Shiloh Sylvain, Sayah Sylvain, Mikee Sylvain Dujour, and Seven Sylvain, along with extended family and many others whose lives he touched.
Antonio lived his life with faith, determination, generosity, laughter, and an unwavering love for his family. His favorite words beautifully reflect the life he lived:
“Le pire dans la vie, c’est de ne pas essayer.” “The greatest failure in life is never having tried.”
Antonio tried. He persevered. He loved. He gave. He laughed. He believed.
His family will forever cherish his memory and the legacy of love he leaves behind.
